Psychology Level 7 with NUI Maynooth Course at Vita House

Why Psychology?

Our Suicide Bereavement Liaison Officer, Tiffany Walsh, explains…

“I have been infatuated with the study of human behaviours and thoughts since my first psychology course. One of the first pieces of material we studied was the age-old question of “nature versus nurture”. This question has plagued psychologists for centuries – are human traits and behaviours learned through our environment or are they part of part of our genetic make-up? One way they study this is through twin studies: by studying twins who are genetically identical, they can determine which behaviours are influenced by environmental factors. One famous twin study was of brothers both named Jim. In the 1940s, both of the twin boys were adopted by separate families and raised 45 miles apart. When they later met, it was discovered that they had a lot more in common than most people would have thought. They were both named Jim, enjoyed the same hobbies, vacationed in the same spot, married women first named Linda, then later Betty, had a son named James-Allen, and dogs named Toy. Their medical and life history were nearly identical and that was after being raised by different families for 39 years. I was intrigued, and by the end of the course, I felt I knew more about the world and people around me, but also more about myself than ever before. The course really forced me to look inward to find answers, and the self-exploration was healing in a way I didn’t realise until the end of the course. A career in psychology was not something I even considered for myself until I took an introductory course as part of my degree plan. By the end of the semester I was smitten and met with my career counsellor to change my degree plan; I was going to become a psychologist. Since entering the path to becoming a psychologist, I have learned how vast and rich in history the field actually is.”
