Individual therapy is a general term for one-on-one counselling, whether it be with children, adolescents, or adults. There are many types of individual therapy and also many reasons people turn to individual therapy.

Psychotherapy is a process which helps people to understand the deeper roots of their present difficulties with a view to developing a greater understanding and being much better able to manage in life. It deals with issues that are impacting on the person and/or their family life which could be related to a past trauma, loss, anxiety or depression; difficulties in coping with issues in regard to relationships at work or within the family.

Some people may also choose to attend counselling or psychotherapy without having a specific problem or issue, but rather because they wish pursue their own personal development work in the hope of achieving more of their potential so as to live life in a more meaningful and fulfilling way.

Couple therapy is for individuals and couples who need to make changes in their present situation. Life can be stressful, this in turn can take a toll on the strongest of relationships. Distress may be caused by growing conflict, poor communication, difficulty with acknowledging or expressing feelings, sexual issues or a range of other factors. The couples therapist views the relationship as the “client” – this means that the relationship is the focus of therapy rather than either of the partners.

Couples therapy gives partners a chance to explore challenging relationship questions in a safe environment. Couples deal with how to address ongoing difficulties, enhance intimacy, or how to renew the love they once shared. Couples can learn how to handle differences together, without falling into the traps that lead to resentment, detachment or fighting. This is a non-judgmental source of support. This work can help you understand and come to terms with the problems in your relationship and help you to work together towards your own solutions.

Some of the issues that can contribute to distress in a couple:

  • Communication problems
  • Sex/infidelity/infertility
  • Illness/Loss/bereavement
  • Anger/resentment
  • Dealing with differences
  • Stress in relationship
  • Differences in Parenting styles

The importance of family life can not be under estimated. It is important because healthy relationships within the family are essential to the well-being of children and adults, as well as society in general. No family is perfect but some families face enormous stresses and strains which, without some outside help and support, can be harmful to the children and adults involved.

Family therapy involves exploration of the families presenting dilemma, focusing on the beliefs, and the interactions which maintain the difficulty or which prevent its resolution. It tends to view change in terms of the systems of interaction between family members and it emphasises family relations as an important factor in psychological well-being

The family therapist aims to be inclusive and considerate of the needs of the client (individual, couple or family client groups) while also taking into account the needs of other family members and/or other key relationships in people’s lives, to recognise and build on peoples’ strengths and resources and to be sensitive to diverse family forms and relationships, beliefs and cultures. The skills of the family therapist include the ability to work with the family to find creative and healing ways to address and improve the families’ quality of life.

Family Therapy may involve all family members, including young children, adolescents and parents. Or it may involve some family members or couples. Sibling groups may attend with or without their parents. Clients can attend for individual sessions separately from their families if this is their request and need.

Adolescence is defined as the period of life from 12 to 18 years of age. During this time, a young person experiences transformations on several levels (physical, emotional, psychological). Sometimes these transformations occurring in, around, and after puberty can cause difficulties for adolescents often felt as insurmountable and deeply challenging. The end result can often mean parents are left feeling like they don’t know this young person and cannot relate to them anymore. Likewise, the young person can feel like their parent knows nothing about what they are going through at school or with friends.

At Vita House we offer a safe, non-judgemental and supportive space to allow teenagers to find out what their particular difficulties are related to. We support the elaboration of their thoughts, ideas, and ‘voice’ in order that they can feel more at ease in their minds, and bodies.

Psychotherapeutic work with adolescents can be enormously beneficial as it may prevent deeply-rooted problems from worsening in young adulthood.

All psychotherapists at Vita House working with adolescents are aware of and compliant with the Children First Guidelines 2017 and duties and responsibilities for mandated persons under the Children First Act 2015.

Some of the issues young people bring to counselling are:

  • Stress & Anxiety
  • Depression & Self-Harm
  • Alcohol & Drug Use
  • Body Image, Sexuality & Sexual Orientation
  • Parental Separation
  • Peer Relationships & Bullying
  • School refusal
  • Living with a label – ADHD, AUTISM etc

Most children move through developmental milestones easily, however, there are times when things are not so seamless and if that is something that has happened in your child’s life, it may be helpful to see a professional Therapist.

In therapy, children learn by doing. For younger kids this could mean drawing, playing and talking. For older children it could involve a shared activity and using idea’s that focus on learning the new skills they need. Working with a therapist can help young people to understand and express their feelings and to change behaviors which may be causing problems in their lives. It also helps to enhance self esteem and to deal with challenging situations they may be faced with. The therapist will work to help the child believe in themselves and find their own strengths. Therapy builds helpful thinking patterns and healthy behaviour patterns while also introducing appropriate coping styles for life’s difficulties. The therapists work to the child’s pace and will use a variety of tools to engage with young children. Providing early help is usually more effective than waiting.
